Video games are becoming more popular with each passing decade, and the demand keeps rising as people of all ages now participate. Consequently, there’s a rising demand for people to make video games, which also results in a sharp increase in the demand Game Art Courses or Game Development Courses. A video game’s look is the second most important factor in its success, after its playability

While some video games strive to be as realistic as possible, others aim to be more stylized. To achieve the desired result, the game artist models and textures characters and objects accordingly.

A games artist creates 2D and 3D art for video games, such as characters, vehicles, props, scenery, backgrounds, objects, colors, textures, and clothing. But to create the exact texture they must use specialised software. Some of the powerful softwares are listed below:

Zbrush

ZBrush is one of the most advanced 3D sculpting programs available. One may take the Zbrush Course to become an expert in 3D modeling. ZBrush mimics traditional sculpting techniques all done digitally on a computer, which makes it unique among 3D tools.

Working with ZBrush is like shaping a digital ball of clay by hand.

The Pixologic, Inc. company first presented ZBrush in 1999, and it was officially released for PC and Mac in 2009.

ZBrush’s sculpting tools allow for a wide range of creative possibilities. Aside from being able to create more organic and detailed models using ZBrush, artists can also get to the finished product much faster than with Maya or 3ds Max.

Digital clay can be pulled, pushed, squashed, scraped, or otherwise manipulated in ZBrush just like real clay.

Artists can use the software to create all kinds of models that are ready for rigging or final production. ZBrush is well known for its ability to create organic figures with lots of surface detail, but it can also be used to create other objects such as vehicles or weapons.

Currently, it is recognized as the most advanced 3D sculpting software available. ZBrush has become so successful due to its extensive toolset and a wide variety of applications.

Houdini

Side Effects Software, a twenty-five-year-old Toronto-based company, developed Houdini, a 3D animation and special effects program.

It was designed for 3D animation and VFX artists working in film, TV, video games, and virtual reality. Using Houdini, you can combine these worlds into one powerful tool.

The company’s former flagship product was PRISMS, a suite of 3D graphics tools that led to Houdini’s creation.

Houdini’s unique node-based approach allows for multiple iterations, making it easy to modify your animations and effects.

Although Houdini is primarily used for dynamic environments and particle effects, it also includes tools for modeling, animating, and rendering for artists who wish to use it for other tasks. The procedural nature is what sets Houdini apart from other 3D animation software.

The majority of assets in Houdini are created by connecting a series of nodes. Compared to other programs, this workflow allows artists to create detailed objects in a relatively short amount of time.

Maya

Maya is a fee-based software for creating 3D animations, modeling, and special effects. It is widely used in movies, TV shows, and video games. Professional environments rely on it for artwork and animation since it covers all bases.

Maya allows for dynamics and effects, rigging, 3D rendering and shading, motion graphics,

Pipeline integration and much more.

MAYA 2022.1 offers a wide range of features and implementations that range from simple things to more complex tools. The search feature, for instance, is a welcomed addition to the program.

There are also guides included in the updates that teach beginners and intermediates how to access and use specific tools on the workstation. Several bug fixes are also included in the update. The update continued into the most recent versions, such as 2022.2 and 2022.3, featuring better control for models, improved USD, amplified rendering, rigging enhancements, substance support, and bit frost updates.

Originally developed by Alias, it is currently owned and developed by Autodesk, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. A variety of interactive 3D applications (such as video games), animated films, TV shows, and visual effects can be created with it.

Substance Painter

In terms of 3D painting tools, Allegorithmic’s Substance Painter is incredibly powerful. Digital painting can be compared to Adobe Photoshop in 3D.

Texturing models is the main purpose of Substance Painter. You can create textures that are much harder to achieve in purely 2D programs such as Photoshop with its advanced masking and procedural texturing tools.

There are several incredibly useful features in Substance Painter. Examples include 8k texture baking, real-time PBR material workflows, and a wide range of pre-set materials.

In the 3D viewport, you can paint both the 2D maps and directions on the 3D model.

By doing this, you can see how your texture will look in real time as you edit it. With Substance Painter, all textures are displayed and exported in PBR format, so they’ll be imported directly into a game engine.

You need a polygonal model that has been UV unwrapped before you can use Substance Painter. In this case, the 3D asset would be imported and used as the surface/object for painting.

As a lucrative career option, the gaming industry offers many avenues for game artists to unleash their potential and make a good living.

With the popularity of video games increasing, there are more opportunities than ever to create games and make a career in the industry. There is always a high demand for game developers, artists, and designers in this industry that is constantly growing.

MAGES Institute offers a few courses focused around 3D modelling for Games, including one Diploma in Game Art program (1yr) designed for a career in the growing video games industry. With Industry experts armed with relevant and recent experience, MAGES is able to provide up-to-date high-end tuition to propel students into the future with impressive portfolios.
